PORCELAIN MARK - W + CROWN HANDPAINTED MARK ON PORCELAIN Platter and Jug
The hand-painted Crown marks are actually "overmarks", which are usually applied by an Importer in order to conceal the original manufacturer or supplier source. Why would a company do this? Merchants did it to maintain their competitive edge. This way they avoided revealing their secret sources. This practice was most common ca 1900 - 1930s. which probably dates this hand painted floral set. In this case, that was by A Schmidt & Son.
A Schmidt & Son is the name of this Company from New York. The items appear to be probably of German origin, but the original pottery mark is unfortunately only partially visible.
The pieces are exceptional. They are hand painted and large. The quantity of 1 means one set of two pieces which are pictured.
