From China, these figures were often used in Bonsai. Japanese history is mixed with the figurines.
One of the seven lucky gods of Japan is depicted with a fish and he represents honesty.

Asia's history is blended with religions and areas. These figurines are from China, but the people or gods they represent go back centuries.

Mudmen were brightly glazed figurines of women, wise men and old sages, sometimes fishing, seated or standing, holding flutes, scrolls, pots, fish and other objects of mystical importance. For a wonderful discussion and history of these, refer to:

They are called mudmen because they were made from the mud of the rivers that flowed through villages.

This particular piece has the word CHINA incised in the bottom. One has to look carefully. The 55 cents refers to the price when it was purchased by my Nana decades ago in a little shop.

Measurements in inches and centimeters: The figurine is 3.4" (8.5 cm) high, 1.75" (4.5 cm) wide and 2" (5 cm) deep.

This piece is in excellent condition. Although we wish to sell, we prefer to have loyal, satisfied, repeat customers. We do this by fully describing every flaw that we see. There are no cracks, chips or crazing. We must add that this are not fine porcelain. They were made by hand but have some glazing and much of it is rough finished. That is the way they are produced. It is not considered a flaw or damage. We do not sell damaged items. You may buy with confidence.
